A Family’s Journey

I did become friendly with two non-physician coworkers, and we began getting together for martinis and cigars on a frequent basis. I no longer drank much beer, as it did not provide the needed effect without voluminous consumption. I was struck sober, lying on my living room floor, unable to get up, bleeding from a gastric ulcer just before Labor Day weekend in 2004. That is where this amazing journey in sobriety began. When I first got sober, I spent the first year finally seeing myself in a way that I had been completely unaware of. And I actually felt a huge relief when I realized what my problem was because I felt like I finally had a solution. I thought it made everything go away and I never thought that I had a problem. My first drink was when I was in the 6th grade and I was just hanging out with my older brothers and some of their friends. It wasn’t until I was at the end of 8th grade that I started drinking every weekend. At first it was difficult, but now it’s just become my life. Before I got sober, I remember thinking that sober people were boring. I thought sober people didn’t go out, that they didn’t do anything, and I was honestly weirded out by people who didn’t drink. I think it’s important for people to know that just because I’m sober doesn’t mean I’m dead. I go out dancing, I’m 100% me, I can literally do everything I did before except I just don’t drink.   1. Eat lots of protein. Proteins are made up of smaller building blocks called amino acids.
  2. Eat less saturated fat.

  5. Exercise often.
  6. Get enough sleep.
  7. Listen to music.
  8. Meditate.

I had a very fixed idea of what a problem drinker looked like, and I wasn’t it. I was convinced that things weren’t ‘bad enough’ for me to have to quit completely.

I can’t explain why it took me another 22 years to make a commitment to real sobriety nor why I never got DUI, lost my lifelong partner or got fired from my job. My best guess is that I was exceedingly lucky on all counts. I had my last drink June 16th of 2015 and started in an IOP program on Monday the 22nd.
